This webinar will detail the various components and requirements to develop effective sediment basin designs. The webinar will provide an overview to “SEDspread”, a (FREE) user-friendly spreadsheet-based design tool for designers to appropriately size sediment basin parameters. The workbook allows users to input site specific parameters and constraints to determine: basin capacity and configuration, surface skimmer size and dewatering rate, auxiliary spillway design, and baffle configuration. The workbook includes a summary sheet that provides users with schematics of the designed basin, available as a supplement to facilitate effective communication between designers and contractors for constructing/installing the basin.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the various components and concepts that are used in the design of a sediment basin.
  2. Learn about a spreadsheet based tool that can be used to quickly and appropriately size sediment basins.
  3. Attain background into the mathematical relationships that are used in the SEDspread design workbook to design effective sediment basins.

Assistant Professor

Auburn University

Dr. Michael Perez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Auburn University. He has been working in the stormwater management area since 2012 through research and consulting projects with the Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Ohio DOTs. His expertise is in full-scale performance-based testing, having designed and conducted experiments evaluating storm drain inlet protection, ditch checks, sediment basins, sediment barriers, rolled erosion control products, and surface skimmers at the Auburn University Stormwater Research Facility. He currently serves as the Chair of the Standards and Practices Committee for the International Erosion Control Association. He is a Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Alabama and is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC).
